The First set of plans I wrote was How to Build an Inexpensive Protein Skimmer. I wrote the plans because I built an amazing protein skimmer, and I knew other people could benefit from all the research I did. I tried many different DIY skimmer designs, I ultimately scrapped them all. By that point I gained much knowledge on how counter current skimmers work and was able to come up with my own design. It amazed me how good the skimmer I built performed. everyone that that seen said I needed to make and sell them. but shipping and building them was not in my time budget. I got a pen and paper and jotted down what would end up being my first set of plans. You will not believe your eyes when this skimmer starts producing huge amounts of skimmate. This skimmer costs under $50 to build. You will need a water pump and an air pump, most of you will have these items already. You can build and have this skimmer up and running for well under a hundred dollars. It is built using standard white PVC pipes and fittings that can be bought at any hardware/home improvement store. In This How to Build a Sump Refugium Filter ebook I explain how to build a sump refugium sufficient for reef tanks up to 125 gallons. although, depending on the size of your display tank, you can build a bigger or smaller one using the same concept. Using a standard 20 gallon long tank I guide you in building an amazing sump filter with a macro algae garden that will last for years and years. It cost about $50.00 to build, and other accessories you will need vary. The refugium section is situated in the perfect location allowing water to constantly and gently pass through allowing the macro algae to work its magic, feeding off all the high nitrates and phosphates in your water. I go into a little bit about water pumps and head loss you can find more information on head loss and water pump sizes you might need at Reef central head loss calculator. Three years ago I decided to start another 75 gallon reef tank. I didn't want to spend a few hundred bucks for the rock, so I started looking into other alternatives. There was fake coral reef inserts, but I didn't want that, my new tank was going to be a real coral reef. I stumbled on a few websites where some people made their own live rock. I tried their recipes, and was not to happy with the outcome. I scoured the internet and talked to other hobbyist and really couldn't get any type of help on how to make really good looking rock. I started to use different ingredients and after about a month of trying I found the perfect recipe or making Live Rock. This recipe produce the most unbelievable looking porous rock.
Google's online dictionary defines porous; as a rock or other material having minute holes through which liquid or air may pass.
Perfect for your reef tanks biological filter, This rock is the perfect mix of porousness, aesthetics, and strength. It is the answer you have been looking for. You can make hundreds of pounds of my rock for the price it would cost for one live rock from your local fish store. Oh yeah, and NO HITCHHIKERS!
